Matthew Robert Haynes - Intern, Student, Coach, Sports Enthusiast
Welcome to my blog! I'll be updating this blog in conjunction with my latest professional/educational endeavor, interning for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League. I will be reporting to the Director of Government Affairs and the Director of Outreach and supporting all of their various initiatives. In addition I hope to gain insight and experience with other aspects of the organization.
First a little bit about me. That's me on the right with the orange shirt, the shiny head and the winning smile. I'm pictured with my League Champion U8 soccer team from SoccerFirst, my former employer in Columbus. A great bunch of kids that taught me just as much as I taught them. Winning isn't everything, but it sure is fun.
I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Princeton High School. I played a variety of sports growing up including soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball, and ran track. I have always had an interest in recreational, collegiate and professional athletics and how the associated organizations and institutions affected and interacted with the local community.

I graduated from PHS in 1994 and matriculated to THE Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. My mother, grandfather and great grandfather all attended Ohio State as well. Some people claim to "bleed scarlet and gray", I have the lineage to prove it. While at OSU I had great experiences, many of which were sports related.
As you would imagine given the size of the student body and the large number of international students at the school, the intramural soccer program at Ohio State is one of the largest in the country with hundreds of teams and thousands of students participating each year. I was a game official, supervisor and eventually the Student Director of Intramural Soccer at OSU. It was an incredible learning experience that was difficult at times but gave me my first glimpse into intricacies of management.
I also spent time working at Ohio Stadium (pictured), more commonly known as The Horseshoe. Much of the work was a bit mundane and of the routine maintenance variety but the position provided insight into the operations and management of major sporting events. The best part about the job was sitting just a few feet behind the endzone at field level for Buckeye football games. The only way to get closer is to strap on a helmet. Like so many Ohio State alumni Buckeye football continues to be one of my primary interests.

After I graduated from Ohio State in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, I entered the workforce and landed with a direct marketing company in Columbus. I spent the next ten years working as an Account Manager and a Project Manager in Ohio and New Jersey. I had some great successes and learned a lot about the modern business world during that time but also experienced a great deal of frustration. Finally I realized I wanted to make a change and decided to pursue a Sports Management M.B.A. at Tiffin University.
I have learned a great deal from my instructors at TU. It has been an extremely worthwhile experience. While I have been pursuing my degree I have worked for both the YMCA and SoccerFirst as a youth sports coach, a game official and an instructor. Coaching youth soccer is something I am very passionate about and I hope to have the opportunity to pursue it again one day.
I have left the YMCA and SoccerFirst (and many close friends) behind in Columbus and moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to begin an incredible opportunity. While the prospect of moving to a location where I don't know a single person is a little bit daunting, I couldn't be happier about the chance to work for a world class professional sports organization, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
